Keith Charters recommends four networks to refer to:

1. Writers groups and Scottish Association of Writers (SAW)

There are quite a few local writing groups – Erskine Writers and Edinburgh Writers’ Club to name but two. Local libraries will often have details of clubs. Many of the groups are affiliated to SAW, which runs competitions, conferences and the TC Farries Award.

2. Writers' Guild of Great Britain (WGGB)

WGGB is a TUC-affiliated trade union for professional writers. To be a full member you need to have had work screened, published, performed or broadcast. There is also a candidate membership for people who are writing and working towards becoming professionals.

3. Society of Authors (SOA)

SOA is also a trade union for professional writers and the Society of Authors in Scotland (SOAIS) is a very active branch of the SOA.

4. Literary salons and monthly gatherings
