Architecture provides around 55,000 jobs in the UK creative industries. Other than architects themselves, key roles include town planning officers, architectural technologists and technicians.

The term covers the process and product of planning, designing, and constructing buildings and other physical structures.

Many architecture companies register for public procurement opportunities, and bid for work in the public sector. Others also work for private clients. Awards and good press are important – positive publicity makes businesses more visible to potential clients.

Industry organisations

The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) is the professional body for Scottish chartered architects. It provides a wide range of services and products for architects, students of architecture, construction professionals and all those with an interest in the built environment and the design process. These include a practice directory, links to design competitions, consultancy and information on conservation and sustainability. RIAS also organises awards and events for its members, offering opportunities for businesses to stand out and network with peers and potential clients.

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) offers a wealth of information about the architecture industry. It contains news and events listings, information about campaigns, and both online and offline exhibition opportunities. Its directory, Find an Architect, gives practical information on working with architects, as well as providing dispute resolution and referral services.

Architecture and Design Scotland is a non-departmental public body championing excellence in place-making, architecture and planning. It provides a range of programmes, each of which has its own set of resources and education materials.

Architects' Journal is a weekly trade magazine for industry professionals.

The British Council’s Architecture Design Fashion (ADF) department creates links between designers and cultural institutions around the world. It’s part of the British Council Arts Group, which works across 109 countries to build opportunities for the UK through the worldwide exchange of knowledge, experience and ideas. The Council also provides funding opportunities for UK design professionals, particularly those who want to develop their skills overseas. Projects include curated programmes, support for exhibitions, and participation at festivals, workshops, and conferences.
