The UK fashion industry is estimated to support 797,000 jobs and is made up of people at all levels of designing, making, and retailing textiles, clothing, fashion accessories, footwear, and leather goods. Specialisms include design, pattern cutting, manufacturing, photography, journalism, styling, cleaning and finishing services, and performance testing.

The Scottish fashion sector has a strong history and tradition of knitted and woven textiles design and manufacturing. There is a high proportion of business-to-business activity within the sector. Opportunities for networking within the sector are available through trade bodies, and trade events and shows, both internationally and in the UK.

Industry Organisations

UK Fashion and Textile Association (UKFT) is a membership network that describes itself as “the UK voice and meeting place for suppliers of fashion and textiles". It represents the industry in lobbying government and retailers. Its website holds a wealth of business statistics and research on exporting, selling, funding, and other key topics.

Scottish Textiles and Leather Association (STLA) is a membership organisation for Scotland’s textile design and manufacturing sector. It promotes collaboration and networking between members. It also links Scottish textile and fashion products and companies to buyers, suppliers and potential customers. Its resources include trend information reports, a map of Scottish textiles tourism, and a members’ directory for networking opportunities.

British Fashion Council (BFC) provides business support, championing designers and helping them to innovate and make their work commercial.
