The film industry is comprised of a variety of roles including filmmakers, production companies, distributors, exhibitors, and related finance, legal, location, agent and technical services. Films can involve a handful of people or hundreds – craft and technical crew, actors, agents, finance, production, costume and make-up as well as distribution, sales and marketing, and exhibition including cinemas and film festivals.

Creative talent within the film sector often use agents to broker opportunities and contracts. Small and large production companies pitch projects to gain funding or commissioning agreements. These relationships between filmmakers and broadcasters or commissioners are often established through networking, for example at industry events. Filmmakers frequently submit their work to film festivals for exhibition. Often films screen in competition as awards gain distinction and create opportunities for creative in this crowded market.

The UK film industry is supported by public bodies like Creative Scotland, Creative England, British Film CommissionBFI and the British Council. According to Creative Scotland’s Film Sector Review (2014), the BFI and Creative Scotland are the most significant potential funders and talent developers within the Scottish film industry, providing £3.5m to production and development funding in 2012/13. Each organisation’s website outlines its funding, individual and project development support, and activities.

The Creative Industries website is a rich source of research, facts and figures covering economic data, investment, industry value reports, and employment figures for the UK film industry.
