David Thomson recommends five markets for games developers:

1. Independent Games Festival (IGF)

Held during the main Game Developers Conference each year in San Francisco. The IGF was established in 1998 to encourage innovation in game development and to recognise the best independent game developers. There are cash prizes available for the best games, although each category is fiercely contested.

2. GameCity

An annual week-long festival of games and gaming culture held in Nottingham each October. A great place to showcase your game to an eager and enthusiastic audience.

3. EGX Rezzed

A UK event dedicated to PC, indie and console gaming, typically held in March. The event is organised by the team behind EGX, the UK’s largest public games show, and sponsored by Eurogamer.net.

4. Dare ProtoPlay

Held in Dundee to showcase the Dare to be Digital development competition. This indie showcase event allows developers from Scotland and beyond to get their newest games in the hands of players from Scotland’s most famous game development city.

5. IndieMegaBooth

A showcase of independent game developers working together to bring indie games to the forefront of conference goers’ minds, and the gaming community as a whole. They take space at many of the large shows such as PAX and Gamescom in Germany, and operate the stand on behalf of selected developers and games. A very competitive selection process, but being part of it can be a huge profile boost.
