Andy Campbell recommends five networks to refer to:

1. Glasgow Institute of Architects (GIA) and other RIAS chapter institutes

Design competitions, exhibitions and awards give an opportunity to display your work, CPD events give an opportunity to learn and present your work while special committees allow you to participate and contribute to a specific area of architecture.

2. Schools of Architecture

Building relationships with students is beneficial when considering taking on staff and links with university staff can be of benefit for research and built work. Part-time tutoring, guest reviewing and proposing lectures could all be opportunities to be build on these networks.

3. Co-working spaces

Many co-working spaces aimed at the creative industries are starting to be established across Scotland. Basing yourself in such places can make sense economically and also widen your network within your own and other disciplines.

4. Creative Networks

Organisations such as Creative Edinburgh and Creative Dundee allow a chance to come together and discuss ideas with a wide range of disciplines. Although not yet formally established in Glasgow, there are other nights such as Pecha Kucha and Velvet and Silk Cafe which aim to provide a similar platform. Go along and speak about what you do or just listen at one of these events.

5. Scottish Ecological Design Association (SEDA)

SEDA and other such associations and societies give a more focused discussion around particular topics. We also enjoy events by New Glasgow Society and Glasgow City Heritage Trust but defining your own interests within architecture and contributing to those groups will get your voice heard.

Andy Campbell is an architect and co-founder of Dress for the Weather, an award-winning Glasgow-based design practice working in a range of areas including architecture, public art, mapping, research and education.
