Toby Webster

Biography

Toby is founding Director of The Modern Institute, Glasgow. Established in 1997 as a commercial gallery, The Modern Institute works with over 40 local and international artists including Martin Boyce, Jim Lambie, Richard Wright, Cathy Wilkes, Simon Starling, Urs Fischer, Monika Sosnowska, Adam McEwen and Anne Collier. Collaborating on both public and private shows with local and international artists that span the globe, The Modern Institute also participates in several major international art fairs every year.

Having studied Environmental Art (1991-1993) at The Glasgow School of Art, Toby was formerly a committee member at Transmission Gallery, Glasgow (1995-1997); curated shows at the Centre for Contemporary Art, Glasgow (1997-1998); and was an Associate Curator at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London (2001-2003). Whilst running The Modern Institute, Webster founded a second gallery, Roma Roma Roma (2001-2003), in Rome.

Toby has also worked on a number of curatorial projects including: Rirkrit Tiravanija's Community Cinema For a Quiet Intersection (Against Oldenburg), Glasgow, 1999; My Head is on Fire but my Heart is Full of Love, Charlottenborg, Copenhagen, 2002; and Strange I've Seen That Face Before, Museum Abteiberg, Mönchengladbach, 2006.

Toby was on the selection committee for Frieze London between 2003-2012 and on the selection committee for Art Basel between 2000-2005. He has also served on the boards of the Common Guild, Grizedale Arts and Glasgow International.
